About Horseman Billy Smith - Upstate New York

Horseman Billy Smith owns and operates Potter Mountain Farm, which is located on over 100 acres, nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, just minutes north of the heart of New York's racehorse country in Thurman.

Billy specializes in horsemanship, colt starting and problem solving. Relying on a strong foundation-training program to build a relationship based on mutual respect and trust, Billy is dedicated to promoting good horsemanship through education and understanding of the horse. He’s been working with horses for nearly four decades! Billy has helped hundreds of people with his unique blend of horsemanship philosophy with tried and true cowboy wisdom.

Billy has received formal training in all disciplines of riding and has studied horsemanship with such greats as Ray Hunt, Leslie Desmond and Tom Curtin. Ray showed Billy how to look at things from the horse's point of view, which is a major part of the horse training that Billy still uses today.

Billy’s main goal is to help teach others how to develop a reliable partnership that is based on mutual respect and trust. He focuses on the horse's mind and the partnership that can become real.

Billy Smith is a great teacher who enjoys working with people as much as he enjoys working with horses. In a Horsemanship class, Billy will help each rider experience balance, timing and feel at his or her own level. He tries to help each rider to become one with their horse, in a quality balanced relationship
